It seems these days as soon as you think you have the ultimate rig something else comes out.

Is a E6400 core duo running at 3.3Ghz plenty of power for the next few years of DX10 games ??

Is the Quad cores just meant for people that do lot of work and like to run a lot of programs at one time ?

I think the same generalised anecdote that we used when the first dual cores came out still applies here:

If you dont know what you can use a Quad core for, you dont need one... ;)

By the time games come out (lets ignore multi-threaded apps since that would be answered by above) to utilise Quad cores properly, the Quad cores out now will be old hat...

ps3ud0

Well wait till the 22nd of july prices drop on both dual and quad core processors

is this for definate, is that the official date? coz that would be mint as that's when i get mucho's money thru for a nice , and long overdue, upgrade =]

Quad Core is not needed for games yet, by the time games are optimized for Quad Core, the current quads would be out of date and their will be something new out. :D

How long has dual cores been out now? almost 3 years?

Well no games really offer any real performance increase yet for dual cores, so I'd say its gonna be yonks before quad cores are really needed.

Until games are photorealistic and cant really get visually better, then we'll start seeing more CPU related performance, but until that time, its all about GPU and the CPU really matter very little.

Didn't Gibbo also say that Socket 939 CPU's would no longer be available after Summer 2006? :D I rushed and bought an x2 3800 at almost 3x the price they are now. Always safest to wait and see..... but then you end up with nothing.
