hi guys i am building a MATX system in an X-qpack so i need some advice on a motherboard, i have found three so far but was told that the intels are no good at overclocking, i relise that im not going to get ahuge overclock like from current atx boards but was wondeing which is the best out of theses three, my primary use is overclocking on air cooling and i want it to be good for games etc, not worried about the onboard graphics but always usefull

ASUS

INTEL

GIGABYTE

Thanks

They all seem good enough too me, but all lack a RAID controller.
Which is what I want. Therefor I am going for the Asus P5LD2-VM DH which uses the Intel Matrix something.

Check a review, including overclocking, here.

It's a VIA chipset.

The gigabyte looks the best option, as if the DS3 is anything to go on, it should overclock well.

[Edit] It's a 945G, NOT a VIA chipset.

not going to touch that asus with the VIA chipset then, looks like its going to be the other asus in the OP

Sorry, it's not a VIA chipset, it's the Intel 945G.

Only problem with this is that some people have reported it locking to a max of 300FSB, which would be an overclocking problem if you own an E6300 or 6400.

Hmm, I own a E6400. Coming in tomorrow I think.

Not getting the board anytime really soon, so I got some time figuring things out.
Problem is, this is the only board so far I have seen that has decent features ie. RAID controller.

There are other boards with PCI-X1 or X2 slots, but all smaller RAID controllers are X8 or X4.

[edit]Just checking oc.co.uk and they have x1 cards..bit expensive though...[/edit]

[edit2]I found a picture of a coming Gigabyte board here which uses a G965 Express Chipset. But as far as I can read no RAID again.[/edit2]

This one has a X4 slot and decent on board graphics too

Very interesting board, Massive.
The Gigabyte GA-965GM-S2 looks exactly the same, apart from the x4 slot being a x1 on the gigabyte.

Gonna check it out..thnx!

Btw, I don't care about onboard graphics as I will install a 7900GTX on it.

no probs, i am using a 7900gt so im also not going to use the onboard still good though incase your main one has a fault

Indeed. Always handy.

Too bad neither of the two boards are available yet.
Also, even if I take the Asus I will only take a x1 controllers.
I will only use two drives anyway (Lian Li PC-V300's max is two hard drives in it's bays. And I will install watercooling.)

Just hope they get to resellers asap.

the asus P5B-VM is starting to appear at some reselers but showing as none in stock which is a bit of a pain :( , hopefully OCUK are going to stock them

Would be nice. Shipping might be a problem though.
They seem not to ship above 2Kg to abroad.

Now I can arrange something with someone I know, who lives like 20 mins away from oc.uk and could ship via DHL, but still...

[edit]First shop here in Holland I came on has it listed. Not in stock ofcourse. Figures[/edit]

by a monster cpu cooler for at the same time :p

I ordered a retail E6400, but I am going for a Alphacool Nexxxus XP with a Black Ice II. Should de the trick as well I hope.

Don't forget if you're going for a SFF case like the Sugo or Aspire, you're going to need a cooler which is both short, and not too wide either (unless you're happy modding the case).

yeah got a gigabyte g-power cooler which should do the trick

You are kidding right?

SG01 compatibility notes:
- CPU cooler cannot exceed 78mm in height
- The combined depth of power supply and optical drive cannot exceed 355mm

Gigabyte G-Power Pro (Socket A/754/939/478/775) Cooler (GH-PDU21-MF) (HS-004-GI)
- Dimension 110 x 110 x 109mm

It's not gonna fit :(
