How do the Core 2 Duo's rank up, is it a simple case of the bigger the number the better the CPU? E.g E6600 is better than my E6420?

I have a MSI G41M4-L with a E6420 and i was looking for a new dual core CPU my board will support THIS Witch Core 2 Duo would you say is the best for me to get.

It will be fitted to a day to day use system, shopping, surfing, and work and may put a game of two on it. I have a Quad core gaming system so no need for Quad core's in this one

bigger the number = higher clock speeds, ergo E7500=2.93Ghz E8500=3.00Ghz
thats pretty much the only difference i think baring the level 2 + 3 caches

So My e6420 2.13 that i can clock to 3ghz with 4m L2 caches is not all that bad as the Core 2 range go's?

Would you get a new Core 2 Duo or wait for SandyBridge to push the i3 prices down and just get on the bus

just get a stock C2D and overclock it, most can easily top 3-3.5Ghz with very little effort :)

For your use might as well get one of the cheaper aftermarket heatsinks like the ACF 7 pro and clock the chip.

My E8400 clocks pretty well as you can see from my sig :)

Need to give my cooler a good clean out though as it's been a bit unhappy at 4.11 lately and have had to drop it back down to 4.0
(not that it makes a blind bit of difference though lol)

are the core 2 quads as good overclockers as the core 2 duos

Yeah they are all on par with each other in terms of overclocking. So high end dual and quad like the E8400-E8600 and Q9550-Q9650 will all overclock to 4GHz whereas Q6600 and E6600 usually overclock to 3.2-3.4Ghz:) although the duals have slight edge.

Quads will of course be hotter. With a decent cooler though that's not an issue. I do remember the E6600 clocking slightly better than the Q6600 back in the day.

I've had my e6300 over 4 years now sat at 3 or 3.15ghz the entire time. Never had a problem, always around 55C max. Still see no need to upgrade. The added cost of joining the new socket bandwagon is putting me off as well :o
