Core 2 E8400 3GHz to Quad?

E8400 @ 4Ghz

Ok took some more pics so here goes
These are what i needed to get my X48-DS5 stable however i know it will go higher but my PC6400 ram is holding me back so i've just ordered some PC8500 to see what i can get out of this chip.

Hi again,

As I can see from your bios jpg, there are a lot of autos there, and autos do not make for a good overclock lol.

Best to set you pci express to 100 and not auto, change system memory multiplier to 667(I know your ram is 800 but I need it lower so when we ramp it up it comes back to 800), change host control clock to enabled(this will allow us to raise fsb as we wish and you need to set this at 400), change system voltage control to manual and raise vcore to 1.25v(or a little higher if system is still blue screening in windows) and change performance enhance to standard.

With this configuration you will be running 3.6ghz. Run prime/linx to confirm stability once windows is running ok. What cooler do you have installed? I would also run coretemp when testing to see what full load temps are like. Finally run cpu-z too so you can tell what your real vcore is.

I will pop back from time to time to see how you are doing, good luck

Cooler is an Arctic Freezer pro.

That will be fine for 3.6ghz but keep an eye on temps, under prime load you really want no more than 65/70c. It is also worth noting that nothing running on your system will get near the prime temps anyway, other than prime that is lol.

OK, I made the changes you recommended, windows booted OK which is a first for any bios changes I've made but no change in CPU speed. So I double checked the settings, they were as you requested but windows still shows the completely standard settings.

This is despite having CPU adjustment, CIA in the BIOS, set to off, the speed still drops to 2GHz on occasion.

Damnit imageshack is like treacle today.

well according to cpu-z your fsb is still at 333, so your speed will be the same. Go into the bios and check that cpu host control is enabled and that cpu host frequency should be 400(which it cant be at the mo or cpu-z would say different). Please take another shot of that bios screen. Also can you post pic of memory setting in cpu-z. We will get there do not worry.

like I've said, it just seems to ignore any BIOS settings I use or choose and does it's own thing. At least it's booting after i've made the changes which is better than before, but it's not picking the changes up.

Can you please reboot the system and take note what the post says your speed is. Also when in windows, load up cpu-z and leave it open, then load something to test the system under load(prime/linx etc). When it's working have a look at cpu-z again to see if the speed has increased at all. This will be handy as it will eliminate the doubt as to whether any power saving/stepping down is happening on idle.

Beyond that it's worth downloading memtest and doing a ram check, reset and remove cmos battery and reconfigure, and also look at if any new bios are available

I ran prime 95 and the speed never went above 3Ghz. Post screen still says 3Ghz (333x9)

ok that board has a dual bios, so if it's unstable on one it will boot from the other according to gigabyte. I really need to know what speed your cpu is at when you switch on and see the post screen pls
