I want to upgrade a Dell PC with a Core 2 Duo E6300 (1.86GHz) CPU for something faster.

I've considered either the dual core E8400 (3GHz) or the quad Q9550 (2.83GHz).

Please can somebody confirm that either of these two CPUs will fit, both being LGA 775 processors?

The current memory configuration is 2x2GB DDR 2 6400, is this enough or do I need some 1066?

I don't think these will work, also being a Dell the chances are even slim.

You be looking at a new system.

In order to operate the new cpu's a BIOS update would be needed, looking at Gigabyte range of Motherboards at that time (965 / 975 chipset) they have non official support for the Wolfdale and Yorkfield range.

Being a Dell machine I would highly doubt they would offer a BIOS update, best bet would be log into Dell with the Tag no. this should be stuck on your system somewhere and see what they offer in a range of BIOS updates.

Edit: Do you know what chipset your using? CPU-Z will show this.

Good point, I'd forgotten about the issue of BIOS updates for Wolfdale CPUs, Dell haven't issued any CPU updates in the many BIOS updates :(

It's a q965 chipset so max 1066 fsb which looks like I'll be stuck with a E6700 or possibly a Q6700.
