Hi. I'm hoping somebody could give me feedback on a possible upgrade. At the moment my current spec is as follows:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 @ 2.13ghz
Gigabyte 965P-DS3 Motherboard
Corsair XMS2 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 6400
Geforce 7900 GS
2 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 400gb

At first I was looking at getting a whole new i7 system, but now I'm starting to wonder if it's more worthwhile upgrading just a few components in my current rig. I'm think along the lines of:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 LGA775 "Kentsfield" 2.66GHz (1066FSB)
Corsair XMS2 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 PC2-8500C5 TwinX Dual Channel
Western Digital VelociRaptor 150GB 10000RPM SATA-II 16MB Cache

All this totalling a respectable 300 pounds or so.

I'll be using the system mostly for video editing/encoding and design work.

Will I see a sufficient boost in performance for the money I'm paying? Is there anything else I should be thinking about?

Thanks

it depends tbh if you bought an i7 now you wouldnt have to upgrade for 4-5years:D

is it not better to spend a wee bit more to last longer?

Wouldnt bother with a raptor when you can get an SSD for the same price. A quad will give you a fair boost though, but i7 would make a massive difference for that kind of use.

i7 is really tempting, trouble is I'm wrestling over the thought of getting a Mac Pro later in the year. Been thinking that I could perhaps make a compromise by upgrading to quad and adding some RAM.

Fair comment. I've been looking at the Vertex, but would rather have the 60gb version which is £75 more than the raptor. So it'd be worth the extra cost over the raptor then?
