I compared a Core 2 Quad Q9500 and a Core i3 540.
The specs of the computers were:
16 GB DDR3 Ram @ 1333 MHz
Samsung Evo 250? 500 GB.
Core 2 Quad @ 2.83 GHz (Quad Core) & Core i3 540 @3.07 GHz (Dual Core).
ATI Radeon HD 4550 512 MB
Windows 10 Pro 64-Bit

NOTE: The hard drives, ram, and GPU were the same exact ones I used, I just swapped them out to benchmark the processers, I may attempt to benchmark a Core 2 Duo later.

The program I used to benchmark the processors is Geekbench 4. The computer model we used for the i3 was, HP Z200 SFF Workstation. The other, Core 2 Quad Q9500 the model was, a HP 8800 SFF.

The Core i3, the results are here:

The Core 2 Quad, the results are here:

In conclusion, the core i3 was better for me, so I can have 4 monitors because there was two PCI Express slots and i'm using Hyper-V, the i3 540 was slightly newer (a year newer). However, the Core 2 Quad is better for gaming since it has 4 cores but they're slightly slower then the Core i3's two cores. If you overclock the Core i3, you can probably get better results compared to the core 2 Quad stock. The HP computer I used for the Core 2 Quad was slightly older and it only had one PCI-Express slot.

EDIT:
The Core i3's temperatures were lower, the Core 2 Quad was running at an average of 50 - 60 Celsius. The Core i3 was running much cooler at 30 - 40 Celsius. I used HWMonitor to test the temperatures of the CPU's. HWMonitor can be found here: http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html
