Core 2 Quads - Who still using them?

My 7970 was only utilized up to 60% with Q6600 3.2GHz according to MSI Afterburner. The 3570k upgrade allowed it to be utilized 100%! Frame rates in GW2 went from 50-70FPS to 90-170FPS.

But to be fair, a Q9650 is a fair better chip than a Q6600 at stock. And when you overclock 'em a Q9650 @ 4Ghz will blow a Q6600 @ 3.2Ghz into the weeds. (Can't help but think you should have had that Q6600 @ 3.5)
Q9650 @ 4Ghz is still a very capable processor and the only thing I've seen push it is Shogun2 TW. If you're playing flight sim X that might be a different kettle of fish though.

Yes, those kind of chips also cost a lot more than my 3570K though, and even now they are going close to 3570K money. My Q6600 was only 50 quid.

My Q6600 couldn't reach 3.5 stable due to FSB wall from my motherboard I believe. The most I had was 3.4 stable but the temps weren't good, my chip was a G0 but not a very good one, stock volt was 1.275V or so.

As above. ^

Get this little fella. Use your HDD as storage.
Your mobo only supports SATA3 and SATA3 is fantastically fast compared to a HDD. I use a Sandisk Extreme SATA6 as my boot drive but it's wasted as it runs at SATA 3 speed.

Plug it in, reinstall Windows.
Sit back and feel the love. :D

Wow from the review it goes to show the immense difference between the Ocz vertex SSD which more or less you linked and the 1TB samsung f3 ( I have the 500GB version)

ddr4 will be out in 2014 if people really don't need to upgrade anytime soon. HEVC video codec, Daala video codec and a new WebM will be out next year so new processors will have hardware decoding for those otherwise you will be using tons of cpu playing those like how poorly 1080p x264 runs on a core 2 without a gpu that can do hardware decoding.

a small number of games and video encoding are the only things that really push core 2, everything else performs well. I'd rather not give intel my money for them to change the chipset 6 months later.

I'm crossing my fingers that AMD closes the performance gap within the next 3yrs and that gpu acceleration takes off big time otherwise intel is going to screw us over with prices.

^Exactly why I have no intention of moving from my current i7-920 any time soon (Intel chipset changes) and am also in hope that AMD provide a series of CPU able to compete well with Intel's best offerings.

If I had one of the better Q processors nicely overclocked I would gladly wait beyond Ivy before upgrading.

well im seriously thinking on upgrading my [email protected] to a qx9650 as they on ebay for under £180 should keep my system ticking over abit long with good oc. so that i got some more time save money for good cpu, mobo, ram upgraded.

i could but with the qx9650 i could oc it to near 4ghz lot more easilser than trying to mess around with the all the setting to get my lock 8.5mulitper to higher oc on my asus striker II extreme. that should give me 5-10 months more time but at this point im still on the bench deciding what to do.

no way you could get a better cpu-heatsink/fan and overclock a little more on current cpu

my current cpu cooler is a "Phanteks PH-TC14PE" which is a very good cooler the problem is their limit to what i can get out of my q9550 E0 as it multipler is 8.5x so in order to increase my oc i would have to unlink my memory and cpu, increase the fsb from 1600 to 1833, then play with the voltages. but as my mobo can be very temperament at time it can be a pain to oc, hence if i did get the qx9650 i would only have to increase cpu voltage and the multipler to oc it.

thats a very fair point, :)

pecnarf, as there is no guarantee that a QX9650 will hit the magic 4GHz I would play with your Q9550 a bit and try for at least 3.8GHz (that should be fast enough not to a serious bottleneck for graphics). There are plenty of guides out there for how to OC it and provided you don't go crazy on increasing the various voltages it is pretty safe to do. You only need to increase a couple of them (MCH, FSB) by 0.1 - 0.2v so it's nothing major.

As for unlinking CPU and memory timings, what's the problem? Just got to adjust the ratio so that the RAM runs close to its rated speed.

i was thinking the same ...looking around on google lol there a few q9550 hitting 4ghz so i think 3.8 definatly possible with a little time patience

i7 920 with modest overclock still here. will continue to use it until i get a new gfx card and find it is only being utilised less than 80% or so in most games and/or the i7 is being utilised at 50% (4 cores used but obv not hyperthreading) but as of now my cpu doesnt get used more than 20% and my gfx card is still nearly 100% usage in most games
