Few questions as I am somewhat out of the hardware loop. Last time I was in the know, AMD were all the rage and nForce4 was where it was at.

Now, I have a few questions while I ponder upgrading my 3500+ before it decides 2.7GHz is too fast for it's ageing circuits and commits suicide.

First up, C2D 6750 vs C2Q 6600? Former is about £45 less, is the quad worth the extra?

Motherboards. Which chipset is the one to go for (mild overclocking possible)? Which manufacturer? Any specific boards good to go for?

RAM. Why are there about fifty thousand different speeds of DDR2, DDR was simple enough, everything used 3200 unless it was older than you. Now it would seem less easy, as it seems you no longer just look and say 'ooh 400MHz FSB i'll get 400MHz RAM'

Lastly, I assume my X800XL PCI-E card, hard drive (SATA), DVDRW (IDE) etc. will all plug straight back in?

Would my 480W Tagan still be enough to power it all? Or would that depend on whether it was a Duo or a Quad?

Cheers, interesting read though it is focussed very much on clocking the balls off them, which i'm not interested in doing really.

At stock i'd go for the quad. Overclocked i'd go for the quad.

2.66ghz dual, or 2.4ghz quad.... :p

Motherboard - Gigabyte_P35C_DS3R

I'd say either get the e2180 dual and overclock it or get the q6600 quad (and probably clock that aswell :D) after looking at many benchmarks, i don't think the higher end c2d's are worth the extra £
