core and memory clock issues while playing WoW

I've noticed stutters in game since i started playing it again a month or so ago but i havn't played it that much to be bothered by it and assumed it was just a poor install or something.

But anyway i loaded up afterburner and gpuz today as well as windows task manager so i could monitor the performance of my components so while playing to see if i could spot what was causing it.

My CPU was running around 22-30%
GPU Core clock was around 400mhz
GPU Mem clock was around 625mhz

This was during a raid, dungeon and general wondering around.

I figured it might be because the game isn't very taxing on hardware but i think the low clocks are causing the issue. Is there any way to force GPU clocks?

Edit: specs in sig

Yes I have had this very issue with undemanding games, including WoW and DOTA, in fact on a few occasions it has caused me to black screen crash!

The fix for this (credit to AMD matt) was to run radeon Pro, set a profile for the games which are causing this issue, and check the enable overdrive box, and then make sure the box which says something to the effect of "force 3d clocks whilst in application" is checked.

This forces the GPU to run at maximum core/memory speed all the time whilst the game is running. This solved all issues for me.

Cheers i'll give it a go, i was kind of hoping i wouldn't have to install another program but if needs must.

Hi 4737Joker,

I've reported this issue and it will be fixed in a future driver. Although reading that comment above me makes me wonder if this specific issue is a game issue.

Try this for a fix for the clock dropping. No need to use unofficial overclocking method either so clocks will drop to 2d levels as normal.

1. Download RadeoPro - http://www.radeonpro.info/2013/11/new-build-with-support-for-amd-radeon-r-series/

2. Create a profile using the game exe.

3. Click the profile tab, then the overdrive tab. Click the padlock to unlock overdrive, click enable graphics overdrive, then click 'always use highest performance clocks while gaming'. Don't forget to set +50% power tune in RP. Now right click the game profile shortcut on the left and select apply then launch the game.

I just tried a few random games, i'm going to try a couple more but i thought i'd post to give you some info for now.

Tried 2 more older games so i have a broad selection of results

CS 1.6 core 300ish/mem 625ish
CS GO core 300ish/mem 625ish

At this point i wondered if it was something to do with having 2 screens on so i disabled the second display.

I loaded up Rust and the core stayed around 300 but the memory went down to 150.

Edit: It was afterburner causing the issue, although i'm not sure why it had done it. The sliders were all the way to the left on the core and mem, possibly been like it since i installed the 14.9 drivers the other week. Although it doesn't explain the stuttering in WoW over the last couple of months. I might try rolling back a few drivers to see if this resolves that particular issue, i know it hasn't been down clocked for long because i did some bench marking just after i installed the new drivers.

THank you Joker, this is very helpful. Aside from WOW, it's interesting to see that afterburner could have been causing this. Keep me updated if you find out anything else.

In Undemanding games my cards often downclock from 1150/1450 down to 300/500 if they aren't being challenged like in some console ports or even WoW when sat around not doing much. but once theres a lot of people around me on WoW etc it clocks up to maximum and fps is always 60+. also I use afterburner to overclock.

I thought it was some sort of power saving thing when all the power isn't needed, if fps does drop near 60 or so, it does just power up to full. and I never get any throttling in any benchmarks or demanding games

Wow will use more than 30% of the cpu especially in raids. My pc uses over 40% cpu just sitting in a city. Gpu I almost maxed all the time.
