Looking to build a system for a friend and am thinking of getting him a core duo cpu, on a budget and not sure on what motherboards/memory are compatiable with these new cpus advice please.

I think 965 motherboards are designed for conroe and i think in general these are cheaper than the 975x boards. As for ram most people are going for g.skill 6400 hz kit, although there's a cheaper NR kit. There was a link posted in this forum about a review of various motherboards / value ddr2 memory somewhere

thanks for the reply i see there are a lot of threads about this new cpu, as stated I would like to include it in a build but no needs for oc'ing so just looking for budget/reliable components.

any other input for me would be great thanks.

I would also recommend a Core Duo 2 (Conroe) you dont need to overclock it... I just dont see the point of buying old hardware, also the Gskill memory is really good...

The 'problem' is that although a Core2 Duo CPU and vlue RAM isn't really expensive you still need a whopping expensive mobo :(

Asrock 775 DUAL-VSTA £40ish from some online retailers.

I've managed to spec a system for £500ish everything apart from the optical drives which my friend already has.

Asrock 775 DUAL-VSTA £37
1GB (2X512MB) Corsair Value Select, DDR2 PC5400 (667) £58
300 Gb Maxtor 6V300F0 DiamondMax 10, SATA300 £62
Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 S775, 1.86Ghz £151
Coolermaster Cavalier 3 Silver Chrome Finish £45
CoolerMaster Hiper L3 LGA 775 extreem silent Heat Pipe £18
256Mb Gigabyte PCI-E GV RX80256D - Radeon X800 DDRIII £106
480W Silent pPFC Power Supply AMD & P4 Ready 12cm £15

only things I'm not sure on are the graphics card

Not sure if I can get better bang for my buck with a cheaper card, recommendations pleasae around the £70ish mark would be good.
