Was you gaming or something then?, how did you check the core temp temperatures outside of gaming, do you use two monitors and have one showing temperature software?.
Something would be wrong and you would risk cpu damage in the short term i would think if these temps are at idle.
what is the cpu voltage??
download cpuid cpu-z and it will show you there, aswell as showing you in hwmonitor.
higher core votlage higher temps,, lower voltage to 1.300V and check temps

no mate bsod are natural when trying to overclock
66-70C is fine mate
enjoy
PS: things like tidying up cables (cable management), extra case fans, better quality case fans (high cfm) can all help to reduce CPU temps, what cpu cooler are you using now?
but if i was you i'd just stick with this,

yeah cpu cooler make a big difference but also the motherboard,
more expensive motherboards tend to be better at overclocking, cheaper ones have less features etc. If you put your chip in better motherboard it might do better or it might be the luck of the draw with the cpu ( not all cpu are born equal) and it will always perform at 4.2ghz
In my case i think my motherboard is stopping me going to high speed so im stuck at 4.4ghz which im fine with tbh
In most games gpu will have bigger impact on performance than what speed your i5 is set at, because really nothing pushes an i5 2500k too hard game wise.
im using hyper 212 cpu cooler, cost about £20. But im using lower vcore hence lower temps.
It also won't let me update windows experience index.
