core i5 or i7 upgrade?

I'm finally getting around to a new gaming build, and I was wondering whether it would be better to go for a cheaper i5-3570 or the slightly more expensive i7-3770?

I'm tempted to say i7 for futureproofing, what with the (**** poor?) 8 core PS4 and I've noticed that i7s pop up on system requirements for newer games like FarCry 3.

(BTW No overclocking needed so I'm not interested in the K versions.)

Thanks in advance.

edit: or perhaps just wait for a Haswell i5? hmm....

Don't go for either, wait for Haswell.

I would recommend you going for a K version though, it may be slightly more expensive but the increase in performance is large. Even if you don't intend to overclock now it is always nice to have the option available later, it's a whole lot cheaper than having to upgrade to a new CPU/Mobo at a later date.

Yeah with haswell just round the corner it would be stupid to upgrade now, even if haswell does not have the performance hopefully it will reduce the price of the current gen cpus

It won't drop the price of current cpu's. If anything they will go up. Take a look at the 2500k for example. At one point it was £125-130 now it's a ridiculous £180.

I only upgraded last week to an i7 3770k,people said wait, but CPUs and the new mobos will be far to costly on release so you will be waiting a while for a price drop.
Also if you shop around you can get it a fair bit cheaper, I got mine £50 cheaper than OCUk sell it for!

a few months ago yeah i would have said dont bother waiting as the performance increase will be minimal but haswell is so close now... having said that if your pc can still deal with games on near max settings now, i'd wait a bit longer to see whats about several months after the ps4 launch, that's what im doing. if you havent got anything or it's seriously outdated yeah just wait for haswell and go for that.
