Core i7 4930K turbo bug ! won't boost !

So from one problem to another ... *sigh*... my old 3930K wouldn't overclock one bit without crashing, but it would run with max turbo boost at 3.8GHz at all times when needed and even in low usage applications.

So today I got my 4930K and I have run prime95 for an hour at 4GHz wit zero issues !.
However now the problem is this !
With the CPU (turbo core) set to 4GHz, if a program uses 90 to 100% of the CPU, it runs at 4GHz, anything less than that and it runs at 3.4GHz. WTF is going on there ?
This means than even 3D benchmarks are only running at 3.4GHz (where as they'd run 3.8GHz with my old 3930K)... and now I'm getting lousy scores !.

The more load on the CPU there is it goes up to 4GHz, but if the load is not that big (1 or 2 cores usage) it just hangs at 3.4GHz.

I’ve tried changing lots of settings, and different installs of Windows (7, 8 and 8.1), and nothing has made a difference.

I am seriously getting tired of all these Intel issues !:mad:
 
Yes i have the latest asus p9x79pro bios version 4701.

I appreciate any help as I am so close to swing the sledgehammer at the pc.
 
Hey, sorry to hear about your problems. I dont know if this helps at all and may be different from what you're experiencing, but my self and some friends (with - 4820k) experienced similar problems. I was told to overclock (by OCUK) instead using the strap 1.25 and this solved the issue of it not reaching its desired OC when under load etc etc. :).

Well I found a "solution". The problem is Windows 7 power management options.
I have always had my power setting on "Balanced" but things changed when getting the Ivy-E instead of the Sandy-E. The Ivy-E load settings are different. As mentioned before when only one core was loaded or the application didn't require much power like SuperPI the CPU would just run 3.4GHz at all times. When running Prime95 or Wprime95 or for that matter 3Dmark all cores would load and max boost would get op to 4GHz.

I tried changing my power management settings to "Maximum Performance", and now the CPU would run the 4GHz even in light load applications (SuperPI etc).
However I didn't want the CPU to run 4GHz at all times, so while having the power management setting to "Maximum Performance" I went into the Advanced settings and I set all the advanced power options to the same values as under "Balanced power management settings" - e.g instead of minimum CPU performance set to 100% I set it to 5% so now the CPU will go down to 1200MHz when idling.

It's kinda weird that Ivy-E and the Balanced power management settings does this ! I never had the issue with Sandy-E.

Now I'll have a look at my power management settings on my other PC with Windows Vista and a Core i7 4930K too. Because since I swapped the Core i7 3820 Sandy-E to the 4930K Ivy-E the Turbo Boost wouldn't reach the 3.9GHz but only 3.7/3.8GHz.

Interesting, I've got a 4930k at work on windows 8.1 & this problem doesn't occur. I guess it is just a windows 7 thing. On a side note, I've been very impressed with how cool and low volt the 4930k is. Very happy with my 3930k but if I had the choice new, the 4930k is def the better chip.

Nah as I mentioned - I tried Win7,8,8.1 and it didn't make a difference. I had to adjust the power management profile.
 
I have found the power management options a pita. On balanced load I was getting occasional but irritating problems waking the PC up after going into sleep mode. I gave up in the end and just set it to performance, it still idles at 1200 (set at 100% idle)but jumps up to what I have set the overclock on as required. I also find the 4390K a cool and excellent chip. Runs 10 degrees less that sandy!
 
try enabling all the power saving from auto to enabled in the bios,i had to do that recently for it to work correctly

balanced should work fine imo,if its hanging from sleep then you might need more imc voltage (system agent or vccio/vccsa)
