Core i7-860 and Core i7-870

Are these going to be as good as the current i7 chips as im just about to buy the new p55 motherboard on the 8th when they come out but i dont want to go with a slower chip if current i7s and boards are faster then i would rather go for a faster setup like the current i7 920 if thats better.

well 860 works on a 2.8 ghz, and 3.46ghz in boost + brains 1333mhz. But on a side of 920 is only tri channel which has never saved it

Either will do. The 860 and 870 are roughly approximate to the 920 and 940, but should be cheaper. However the bang for buck represented by a £200 920 over clocked exceeds them all.

Remember, that whatever you buy, it will be out of date in minutes...

860 and 870 will be better

What makes you so sure? The MSI guy I saw interviewed the other day said there was "a performance gap" between P55-based systems and X58-based systems.

I'm not saying the i7 8xx chips won't be faster for certain specific applications; but I do feel that i7 9xx will be faster overall.

I've sailed downriver on the i7 boat already, so it has to be my choice. Extolling the virtues of a cheaper chip would just make me look stupid.

in terms of performance, only in multi threaded applications such as real time rendering or encoding does the 1366 i7's come up top, due to the extra DIMMs and increased bandwidth. the new 1136 socket i7's have the benifit of Turbo Boost and Hyper Threading, which should bring them in line with the 1366 i7's when you consider the price.

the i5 850 however does not have HT, just the Turbo Boost but should bring it in line to the i7 920 again you have to consider the price difference.

with some good cooling, (the ones i have seen reviewed in PC Format haven't been perticularly good) something like the Titan Fenrir, TRUE and Megahalems, it should be something good.

im going to be keeping my eyes on PCformat.co.uk on the 8th, their doing massive benchtesting on all new socket processors and can finaly release numbers, and i would especialy like to see what the Domino ALC and Corsair H50 can do to these cooler running chips.

im really confused with the new cpus out.
guessing by the numbers they are below the 920?
or am i wrong?

Hmm, it's not quite so straightforward.
The i7 860 and 870 are roughly equivalent to the i7 920 and 940, but in Socket 1156 packaging.
The i5 750, however, is clearly below all of the i7 chips.

i honestly cant wait to see what comes out officialy on the 8th, its got more hype and mystery than the 1366 i7's!

im just stuck at the minute as i dont have enough money to upgrade my CPU (why i would want to do that i dont know) but i feel left out of the upgrading. i've got enough money saved up to probably purchase a whole new 1136 rig come Tuesday. i guess i just want a new Lynnfield 920 to come out soon!

have i told you i love you?

no, not enough anyway lol. I'm in no rush to get a new rig by any means (see sig) just that i got a big phat bonus over these past two months, so i have been thinking of getting a 1156 rig. Just i would like some peace of mind that in the next couple of months, there will be something new for my 1366 board.

i might just get a custom WC set up, with my money, then when new CPU's come out, it would be difficult keeping them chilled.

EDIT: just realised i said i have no money for a new CPU, but enough for a 1156 rig, scrap that, i meant i cant see the point in going to the 950 or 975.
