Core i7 870 Tested

Glad it isn't better than my 920, at least, hz for hz it isn't. Don't know how well they'll overclock. :p

Also, looking at this roadmap, the 920 is staying with us, which means Intel may not be cutting the cheaper 1366 CPU's. Hopefully.

Is it worth getting an i7 920 now because they might run out or should I wait and see what happens? I would get an i5 but it wont be compatible with the i9's next year.

I suppose for people who just bought a 920 it could be annoying, but for people like me who have had an i7 since december it isnt a big deal. Also, once we see the performance of the 860 then we'll know if the 920 id worth buying.

Interesting that clock per clock there is hardly anything in them.

Another thing to note is the i7 870 has a thermal design of 95w versus 135W of the i7 920 which should bode well for overclocking especially under a good cooler.

I'm getting more and more interested in the LGA 1156 platform as more details are leaked out.

Does that bother you since you own a 920? :p

Yes :D

Ah well, at least I still have my triple channel DDR3... :p

The main thing that annoyed me was rumours of intel dropping the low end 1366 CPU's, since that would mean I'd be screwed when I upgrade.

Also, since the 870 is the "extreme" edition of i5 (like the 975, I think), I wouldn't be too bothered if it does beat my i7 in overclocks, because mine was still cheaper.
