Right guys im new to this i7 overclocking and would like 4Ghz, but the settings in the bios are a lot different to the Core2's.

Im using the latest bios F5e but has the double post, which is the best bios for a stable overclock at the moment ?

Could i copy someones bios details with a i7 920 and then just fine tune ?

Help would be appreciated.
 
I have the same board on order. Will be getting it next week sometime i hope. I hope you get a good overclock as i will be aiming for 3.6Ghz at least. Have the true cooling it so i hope it will be good enough.

F5f but be aware that DDR3 voltages need to be kept below 1.65V otherwise you run the risk of burning out the IMC on the CPU which would totally destroy it! I tried F5e and that corrupted my bios so had to auto restore to F2. Now trying F5f which has been stable so far but I am not bothering to overclock apart from the Intel Turbo mode which auto boosts to 3.33Ghz. I can get 3.75Ghz 100% stable on default volts but really want 4Ghz which seems to require voltage increases I am not prepared to apply! Outside benchmarks no real world boost either IMO.

Also you have to push the voltages on the CPU/VTT to dangerous levels anyway to get a massive stable overclock so be careful. They all get to around 3.8ghz with ease its beyond this level it gets much harder to keep stable. You can have an overclock working for days then it just BSODs with no warning depending on the CPU load at the time. Make sure you have extreme air cooling at a minimum as these I7's get super toasty.

For now I am staying at stock as Gigabyte are still working out all the Bios quirks. They seem to have the best X58 mobos but still tweaking their DDR3 settings and a few others for stability reasons.

F5g is just out if you want to try that. Also make sure you only use the bios for UD5 as some have tried the Extreme bios (same mechanically but different model because of the extra cooling heat sink) and damaged their mobos.

As mentioned, make sure you've got good cooling otherwise you'll struggle to get over 3G

My UD5/920 combo was running at stock at 55 idle/75 prime, so I wasn't going to do anything with it until I got a decent cooler.

F4r seems to get the best reviews at the moment for overclocking, think I got it from a link from a post by fornowagain.

Unfortunately, my UD5 seems to have developed a fault (powers up then down repeatedly) and is waiting to go back for testing/replacement, which is a shame since my cooler (Noctua) arrived this morning and is going to have to wait :(

Luckily I still had my old system, so was able to get temporarily up and running again with minimal problems.
 
yeah i second that, come on guys i know we have some overclocking Guru's on this forum with a i7 920 and a UD5 ;)
 
Up your bclk whilst trying to keep everything else the same, seems to be the way to get to 3.8

After that, you need to start tinkering with upping voltages etc, not to mention cooling though since you already have water, you should be in a better position than most.

If I had my board working, I'd tell you what I had set on each tab/download the bios file :(
