I couldn't find a beginners guild to overclocking the core i7 930 with my gigabyte X58A-UD5 board and a family member asked for my help... so... i wrote a blog post here

I wanted to share incase anyone had similar hardware, was a novice and wanted to avoid some of the pain I've been through trying to get a nice stable and 'not shockingly hot' CPU.

Thanks!

Never heard of an i7 that can't do 4GHz with a decent air cooler with temps under control. 1.3V isn't scary - only about 10% over stock which is quite normal in overclocking. Having said that most i7s seem to require less to acieve 4GHz. My i5 needs 1.37 though :). Prime is an absolute maximum load stress test, so I'm not sure why you have set yourself this arbitrary target of not exceeding 85 degrees running prime. It wont be so high during normal use, so that's where your safety margin is. At the end of the day, though, you have paid OCUK for a guaranteed stable 4GHz system so you should not settle for 3.85GHz. Get them to sort it out. Yes this may mean you have to RMA, but that's just the way it is unfortunately.

The interesting thing is, if i have load line calibration on, the temps skyrocket. With the setting on standard, the voltage supplied to the CPU ( as per CPUz) is lots lower than in bios and i seem to get lower temps but need higher bios volts. If i set it to level1, its a nice compromise. Level 2 needs 1.3V to hit 4GHZ stable, but i actually had a 100C hit the other day... scary.

Maybe i'll try LLC on level 1 or standard and see what i need to change to get to 4GHZ....

Changed to V 1.32 and LLC at level 1 and i can do 4GHZ with 80c peak temps. Dont know what OCUK are doing tbh. Anyone else tweaked their i7 930 Gigabyte OC's ?

Ihave exactly the same setup as above and i have 3.9ghz stable at 1.29v could probably go less on the vcore but i have to have i high qpi/vtt its at 1.33v now for 3.9. even at 1.35v on the qpi it wont go stable at 4ghz after stress testing keeps bsod saying requires more voltage on the qpi but dont no if should go anymore.im running with the h50 temps are ok jus get bsod dont no if should go any higher on the qpi. do you guys have any ideas?

There's and overclocking guide (PDF) somewhere online for the X58-UD5 (i.e. the original) and a 920, so that might be worth a look - It tells you what's worth messing with :)

I'll edit this post if I can find it :)
