Core i7 980x - QPI vs multiplier to overclock?

Hi all

I remember this debate from the days of the good old FSB but given the new Intel CPU architecture I wondered what the consensus was on the best way to overclock....

ie for a given CPU frequency is it best to run a low multi with a high QPI or is there no difference in keeping the QPI at stock 133 & increasing the multi.


A quick google has not really come up with any discussion of this & the various tech sites seem to have used both techniques to overclock the 980x

I assume that you mean BLK which would be the closest thing to what we knew as FSB. If you raise your BLK then that has a corresponding effect on the frequency of the CPU. But it also has an effect on the QPi and the un-core.

Now with the 980X the un-core has to be 1.5 times the memory frequency so it is a little easier to clock than say a 930 which needs 2 x the un-core v memory frequency.

But the relationships are more complex sounding than they really need to be.

What the best to do rule of thumb wise if find a happy place with your BLK and ram frequency. Once you have that then you increase the multi till you find your max CPU frequency possible with your cooling set up.
 
Yeah I meant BCLK....

But mainly my point was that there are 2 ways to reach a given CPU freq & I just wondered if there was any advantage to the route taken?
 
The best way is to use a combination of both. That way you get the best out of your memory and the best out of your CPU at the same time. :)
 
Hi guys

I was wondering when overclocking, does keeping the un-core setting on auto work without problems or is it best to set the un-core manually for more stable overclock?

At the moment I have my RAM speed at 2055 MHz, so manually setting the un-core to 3083 MHz would be the best correct setting?

With a 980X the un-core needs to be 1.5x that of the ram frequency minimum. More is better because of efficiency but not needed. That is the rule of thumb.

With a non Gulftown CPU it is 2.0x that of ram frequency. So theoretically we use less vTT with the Gulftown than we would with the normal i7 CPU for the same ram frequency.
