core i7 at 6ghz on water ?

a friend of mine said he has his core i7 running stable 24/7 at 6ghz, is this possible or is he just talking out of his waste hole ?

I think people may have managed a superpi run at 6 under liquid nitrogen (or whatever it is they use)... but nowhere near 24/7..

It's possible. As for how long it'll last and what volt he's pumping through that is a different story.

His 24/7 stable will probably be different to others though. I'm willing to bet that would fail a pi test unless it's phase cooled. Ask him for proof.

People bench at that speed but it would also need to be a good chip to do them clocks.

Definitely not possible 24/7. As far as I know, the Sandybridge chips can hit 5GHz, but not 6.

24/7 though? Unless he has it under phase cooling or something similar that chip will be degrading very quickly indeed.

Even under phase, at the 1.6v+ that is likely needed even with a golden chip it'll degrade very quickly.

Yup and even under water I doubt the temps would be amazing at that sort of TDP.

5ghz 24/7 sure, but even then you still need a good chip for 24/7 usage at safe voltage levels or the chip would die in a matter of weeks/few months :S

Definitely don't think he has 6ghz 24/7 at all.

well i found out by snooping on his comp when he was out that its actually a core i7 980x clocked at 4.40GHZ.

Why lie though? Geez. I've had rotters and champs and its mostly down to luck as well as skill when overclocking. I'll freely admit most of my 2600K won't do over 4.7Ghz and quite a lot have not managed 4.5-4.6GHz under reasonable volts, i can't do anything about that lol.
