Morning all,

I have just bought a P7H55D-M (socket 1156) to build a very fast but very quiet home media PC. I really wanted to use the integrated graphics capability as it is more than enough for my needs, but I rip a lot of media so wanted the most powerful CPU I could get, so I paired it with core i7-860.

Now - here is where I think I have got confused so I am hoping someone can help me. This works fine when I install a graphics card (which I don't want to do as it adds heat and noise), but I get no video output from the motherboard when I remove it.

I am starting to wonder (although it isn't made clear in the manual) if you have to have a Clarkdale CPU (which I guess is i3 or i5?) for integrated graphics rather than simply any socket 1156 processor meaning the core i7 processor I have isn't going to do the job.

Does anyone know if this is the case?
 
The VGA is onboard the new CPUs, not the mobo. You need one of the newer i3 or i5 CPUs. With your i7 you will need to use a PCI-E card.

The Intel Graphics Media Accelerator High Definition found on the Clarksdale CPU is not meant for enthusiast gamers but more for the mainstream and casual gamer as the performance on the graphics side of things is not near that of a discrete solution like a HD 4870 or GeForce GT220 card. Having said that the graphics portion of the CPU adds value to the CPU in that you no longer have to buy a separate chip to run graphics it comes on the CPU itself. Where the integrated graphics adds value is as a media platform with high quality Windows 7 features.

appears the onboard gfx uses part of the cpu to work.
 
Yup you need a Clarkdale i3/i5 as the GPU is actually on the chip not the mobo.

With your i7 you will need a dedicated GPU.

Just to expand on that.. Specifically you'll need an i3/i5 6*** series plus you'll need a H55, H57 or Q57 chipset for the physical connection.. which, in terms of cost, makes on chip GPU pretty pointless imo.
 
wow you bought socket 1156 with an i7 socket 1156 cpu :O

you could have gone 1366 and a proper i7 cpu for the same price
