Being looking at cpus, motherboards and ram, thats all i need to upgrade at moment. Just got to ask, at this moment in time is it worth the jump to core i7 and all it entails?. have a core2 q6600 with 8 gig and a 4870 x2 so with one eye on the future and intels upcomming core i9 which acording to all i've read will work on the x58 boards is it a wise move?

But it's what's right for you. The i5s will likely be great value for money, outperforming the i7 920/940 for a lower system cost. It depends on what your plans are for the future.
Given that they and DX11 cards at 45nm are also on the horizon, I would probably wait to see what the Autumn brings.

You wont see a massive performance boost so no, clock your 6600 if you havent already and wait it out
