Yo folks,

I was considering buying a new i7 rig just before christmas but having read up on the latest news going around it seems like the Core i9 and Nvidia Fermi will be a big upgrade from what we have at current.

It mentions Q1 of 2010 but do you think this will be accurate and what do you guys n gals think about this choice?

Discuss :D

Personally I'll be waiting to see nvidia's offering before I upgrade my gpu, and I don't feel any great need to upgrade from my core2duo system just yet. Although, there's always something new and better just around the corner and you'd never upgrade if you kept on waiting on it, so it's up to yourself.

do you think that just the cpu and graphics card alone will cost £1500 :O ?

Im not sure im just going by certain things ive been reading and performance tests on the i9 chip by some websites in which it seems to blast i7 to pieces

From what I have seen so far, the only i9 announced is going to be an Extreme Edition CPU - so expect a price tag of £800+ (possibly a lot more).

Also, If its for gaming then the i9 is no faster than the i7 at the same clock speeds.

That all said, it seems to be an amazing overclocker and very cool, also for CPU heavy multi-threaded tasks it is certainly better than the i7.

As for the Fermi, its supposed to be arriving early 2010. I just hope its all its cracked up to be and introduces some competition into the GPU sector - hopefully it will pull the ATI 58** prices down too.

In conclusion, I don't think its worth waiting for the i9 (unless intel come out with some cheap version) but it is worth waiting for Fermi if you have something to fall back on in the meantime.

Core i9 merely adds an extra two cores, and will cost £1000.

No one knows when Fermi will be out and no one knows what the performance will be like.

If you need a system now, buy a system now.

Im not in urgent need of a system right now. Just having certain niggling issues.

Im currently running on a Core Duo 2.4 but just happened to have about £1k to spend now. So could either spend on an i7 rig or save up a bit more and wait.

if you have a grand to spend get an i7 rig

It's never wise to wait for the next big thing in computing, especially when so little is known about it. Fermi may turn up at some point, no ideas at all on how it'll perform. i9 comes out as a six core chip costing well over what most people consider sane. Not something to wait for if you're a gamer.

1k spare before christmas, take the missus somewhere nice.

Mcdonalds should suffice lol :P

Is everyones opinions then to spend on purchasing an i7 rig now with possibly two 5770s in crossfire instead of saving up some more then spending on an i9 and fermi rig?

Obviously the cost got me a bit by surprise but in terms of durability factors im not sure especially on the graphics side.

So in essence still not sure what to do :( lol :P
