Is there a normal way cores are assigned numbers?

I ask because my new quad has (obviously) core 1,2,3 and 4 (or 0,1,2 and 3 according to windows)

Now currently on full load 1 and 2 are at 62ish and 3 and 4 are at 55 which tells me there is something going on with one side, be that poor AS5 application, waterblock mounting etc.

So, is there any way they are normally assigned, for example in relation to the gold arrow thing that shows you the way they slot into the socket.

It could also be poor contact between the IHS and the cores themselves, which you cant really do anything about unfortunately, just something to bear in mind.

I think it's normal to get some kind of variation in the temps between the cores.

I read the other day, think it was in custom pc mag, that Intel quads are basically constructed from two core 2's that have been 'matched'.

This method of construction means that the chip contains two voltage plains, which will probably be operating at different voltages, as it's difficult to get two sets of cores that match exactly. Apparently they are within tolerance as long as they are within 5c of each other.

This may explain why there are variations between the four cores, especially as each pair of cores seem to be the same temp, but of course this could just be a load of journalistic baloney!! :)
