Hi

Just installed a Q6600. Everything at stock for the moment

Am running Prime and notice that two of my cores are running much hotter than the other two i.e.

Core 0 = 38
Core 1 = 39
Core 2 = 31
Core 3 = 32

Is this normal? Or could it be the sign of a badly mounted heat sink?

I see a difference of about 5c between cores and have heard of 7c so I wouldn't worry too much.

What is the load temp difference in cores?

They seem very low...what cooler are you using? and what program are you using to take those readings?

I know speedfan for example reports lower temps. Download Coretemp if you have already not.

Nice temps for load.

Might be that the heatsink you're using isn't putting as much pressure on the top edge of the CPU as the bottom edge (e.g if it's a heavy heatsink in a normal case).

Also, could be a slightly dodgy mount, but with those temps I wouldn't be too worried.

coretemps can be over 10c in difference, Lapping the CPU should help to even these out althought it will void the CPU warrenty.. From experience I have lapped a Q6600 with 10c difference across cores and brought them down to the same temps a load (well 1c difference).. idle temps may differ be a little more due to different load on the individual cores

Edit: those are nice load temps hehe gonna have to go and check what mine is @ stock load now :P

those are good temps :)

Stock Idle am @ 26/32/26/26

and

Stock Load am @ 36/36/36/36

what heatsink you using out of interest?

I'm using a lapped thermalright 120 ultra extreme with a scythe s-flex fan. I might see if lapping my cpu help equalise the core temperatures... FYI I use core temp to report my temperatures.

What cooler are you using, Pneumonic? 4+GHz on air is pretty amazing.

That is a lapped Ultra 120 - extreme and lapped CPU more info in this thread

For the record I should probably point out that the 4.023Ghz run was with the window behind the PC open :) but have an 8hour prime @ 3.906Ghz @ room temp and run the Rig @ 3.825 Ghz 24/7

what is the VID on your CPU?

those are very nice temps though! assume you have a nice low VID CPU so your not having to use much vcore, should get a good clock

Those temps were taken with a stock VID which I think is 1.35 or 1.325.... I lapped my cpu today and my temperatures have hardly changed. Two of the cores are always around 8 degrees C lower than the other two (idle and load) so am not sure if I should believe the readings to be honest.

Anyway I've had a go at overclocking and have manged to easily get 3.6Ghz prime stable. My temps are (idle, load) at 1.5V

Core 0 40,51
Core 1 33,44
Core 2 40,52
Core 3 33,44

Will try lowering the Vcore to see how low I can get it to be stable at. Don't think I will overclock any further as am quite happy with 3.6Ghz and want this cpu to last a couple of years... Am so glad I upgraded from my old AMD X2 3800+ :)
