Core temperatures

I have an e6400 and I'm confused as to how you measure the temperature. I have the program Core Temp and it shows temperature for both cores individually....do i take the average of this as my processor temperature (eg 42 on each core) or do i add them together? (84!!!)

You don't add them. The temp is just 42C
