Core Temps quite different!

Basically when running coretemp, I have noticed that the range between the cores of my Q6600 have about a 12degree range! This seems a lot. Any idea on how I can sort this out? Or is it simply just a resit the heatsink job.

Cheers

Ok thanks so far guys. My temps are as follows:
Idle - 37 32 24 25
Load (all 100% using Prime95) - 81 78 62 59

My load looks incredibly high, but I'm sure its safe to say there never all going to be on 100% useage at the same time.

My cooler is a Freezer 7 pro.

EDIT: What programs do you suggest I use to test my LOAD temps?

Core temp to get the readings. 81 & 78 is far to hot. 62 & 59 is fine at your overclock with that cooler. 70+ degrees will be doing damage to the cpu over a period of time so i would look into it.

It look to me like you heat sink isn't making proper contact with the cpu, you may want to try re-setting the heat sink and re-applying the thermal paste.

Ok I shall try this again, cheers. I'l let you know how it goes! (when I get round to doing it :p)

I have a bit of variation on mine as well, even after lapping.

That idle is incredibly low for a 3.8 overclock! What cooler are you using? I really need to get round to lapping mine :)

Lads . . . stop bickering! :p

We all got our own exact ideas on whats right and whats not right, I think it's fair to say we run at somewhere between 55°C to 75°C full loads! :)

Getting back on Topic . . .

There are a few reasons I would guess the core temps vary quite a lot across a DTS enabled processor

In no particular order . . .

  • The Heatsink isn't fitted correctly
  • The Heatsink has an convex or concave base
  • The TIM is extremely uneven
  • The CPU has a convex or concave IHS
  • The CPU has a slanted IHS
  • The CPU Cores have an internal TIM bond that is uneven
  • The CPU Cores have an internal Solder bond that is uneven
  • The CPU's DTS is faulty
  • The CPU Cores actually run hotter/cooler (Mainly Quad as two Dies)
I agree, too many school boy arguements in here!
I am going to try lapping the heatsink to give it a flat base as I suspect it is curved. This will also mean I will re apply the thermal solution, and maybe this will help too.
Cheers
