My brother-in-law has asked me about me getting some parts and upgrading his PC for him with a £400 budget.

He plays on his regular old TV, so doesn't go any higher than 1080p and I'd say out of all the games he plays, Fallout 76/Skyrim are the most resource hungry... so looking for parts to make his system run smoother for similar games to those.

His current rig:
  • MB - Asus H81M-K (Socket 1050)
  • RAM - 8GB DDR3 (2x4GB)
  • GPU - HID R7 370 IceQ 2GB
  • CPU - i3-4170 3.7GHz
  • SSD - 120GB Samsung Evo 850
  • HDD - 2TB WD Green

My initial thought is to go for one of the new Ryzen CPU's like the 3400G and the AMD 580 GPU, had a bit of a toy with prices and spotted a few variations on parts (CPU, GPU, MB & RAM) that go between £348 to £449.

If I can work it into his budget, would also like to replace his case as his old one is a bit tired and the front IO is all warped.

Any suggestions on parts would be appreciated.

You should be able to squeeze in a decent upgrade for that price.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £406.96 (includes shipping: £0.00)

Something like this would do the trick nicely, if you shop around you should be able to get the GPU for £10-20 less easily enough. I'm not 100% on that mobo but from what I understand the "Gaming" range from MSI is mostly solid, although I'm sure someone else will chime in.

Cheap 4770 ~£70-80, and the rest on the GPU, Rx5700 for around £320 and worry about the base once you've got more cash to play with. Swap out to 16GB RAM for another £20

quicker then above ryzen 2600 - but cpu is limited with upgrade in future . least with ryzen you can slap in second hand ryzen 4*** in a few years time etc

^^journeys method is sound, unless you like BFV - which one of few games showing intels 4 core weakness. specially come a few months, i7 4 cores should be very cheap in pricing!

I didn't think to look at the clearance range!

Remember you can get a 570 for £10-20 less.

Tossed in a better HSF than orbitalwash's (honestly that's a steal for that HSF) build and managed to slip in a decent case, if you shop around for the 570 it should come to spot on around £400. His build should be slightly faster as of now in some scenarios, but I agree with him in that the AMD route has better longevity in terms of upgrade options.

Thanks for the suggestions.

He's now weighing up his options between the upgrade on his existing machine or a full new system, so I'll let him know what parts are currently in his price range.
