Core2Duo build

Hi there,

Thinking on upgrading and probably going to go with Core2Duo (was going to go with AM2). I've got no idea on the whole Core2Duo business, so hoping someone could cook me up a budget-build :)

Looking to spend around £300 (can go over, say £400 max).

Current system:
- Motherboard: ASUS A8N-E
- CPU: AMD 64 3700+ SD @ 2.8GHz with a Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro
- RAM: 2GB DDR400 (1GBx2)
- HDD: 720GB (200GBx2 IDE, 320GBx1 SATAII)
- Graphics: ATI x1800XT
- PSU: Tagan 480W

From that, I'll (probably) be keeping PSU, Graphics and HDD's, so will only need RAM, Motherboard and CPU (with a decent heatsink/fan).

I hear C2D CPUs are good overclockers, so will probably overclock it a bit (currently overclocking my 3700+ to 2.8GHz stable on air).

Someone was looking for a budget build in another thread, and these components were suggested:

CPU: Intel Core 2 DUO E4300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.80GHz (800FSB)
Motherboard: Asus P5N-E SLi nForce 650 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2
RAM: GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C5 800MHz Value DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400DC)
Fan/HS: Scythe Ninja Plus Rev.B Heatpipe CPU Cooler (478/754/939/940/AM2/LGA755)

Comes to £340 inc delivery. Would these be the best to get, or could I upgrade something for the extra £60 (£400 being absolute max)? Also, would my current PSU be fine with C2D (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-000-TG&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=393)?

Cheers.

Yeah that setup above looks fine.

You could also check out some of overclockers clearance section and pick up some great bargains like...

Gigabyte GA_965P_DQ6 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-066-GI

Patriot 2GB (2x1GB) PC7200 900MHz DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (PDC22G7200ELK)
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-005-PA

Intel Core 2 DUO E4300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.80GHz (800FSB) - Retail
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-142-IN

This all comes to £311.35 and would give you plenty of scope to overclock! As its mostly in clearance though theres not much stock left.

Remember that you may also want to buy a better Heatsink if you are overcloking a bit!

Somehow, I overlooked the bundles.

Spotted this:

Intel Core 2 DUO LGA775 E6400 2.13GHz Retail / Gigabyte 965P DS3 / 2GB Corsair XMS2-6400C5 DDR2 Dual Channel Kit - Bundle

Adding a Scythe Ninja Plus Rev.B Heatpipe CPU Cooler brings it to £399.45 (£409 with delivery).

Would I be better off getting this bundle + the CPU Cooler, or stick to the original components and overclock?

Cheers

I don't think the bundles are cheaper, just for people who haven't found the forum yet ;)

Original spec looks fine. 4300 should overclock massively.
