Core2duo vs Pentium 4

Sorry to ask, i have searched and am getting more confused than ever. I am looking to change my mb and cpu, cant afford a huge amount right now, but i was thinking of the Pentium 4 945 which is 3.4 ghz and has dual cores or the newer conroe chips, probably the 1.8 ghz e6300. I wont be overclocking but how would this e6300 at the slower 1.8 ghz compare to a 3.4ghz pentium4 945. I mainly use machine for gaming and art/3d stuff right now, some video too. Just not so easy these days to compare the cpu speeds (ghz) with these diff technologies so your help/advice would be appreciated
