Hi, if i wasn't overclocking would i notice much of a difference between the E6300 and E6400. I play a lot of games and was just wondering if there would be much of a difference between them.

Enough to make it worth spending the extra £20, Minimal as it is.

One other thing, you are aware that UK law states that all C2D's must be overclocked?

Wouldn't want to break the law would you?

Yes the 6400 is a faster chip.

Get the 6300 and overclock it.

I think the difference between the 6300 and 6400 (both 2mb cache CPUs) will be very small. The difference would be more noticeable between the 6400 and a 4mb cache 6600.

Unless you get an 8800 SLI setup and become CPU limited, then the 2 processors are VERY similair with small but predictable differences. Ocing either would be a great improvmenent.

Basic OCing is VERY easy and a great way to get free performance out of your gear. If you are concerned with budget and the price difference, get a 6300 and OC it. If you are still unwilling to OC, then I'd suggest the 6400 as it is a small price increase.

We'll ive been breaking the law for a couple of months now. :p

If you get some DDR2-800 ram and a half descent overclocking mobo (DS3 springs to mind) then you should be able to run it at 400*7 (2.8GHz) with little or no extra volts and completely safe.

A modest overclock (and thats what 2.8 is on a C2D) isn't really a black art, it just helps to have:

a) Patients
b) a little reading on this forum
c) a spare pc with internet access so you can ask if you get stuck
d) know where the CMOS reset jumper is  (no need on DS3)

I should think all you'd need to do is drop the ram multi to 2 and just push the FSB in 5MHz increments and test.

Or just get suitable components and overclock in the future when you feel more comfortable with it. Or when you feel you need more speed.

Being the upstanding citizen that I am, I urge you to overclock your PC. For your own good.

If you won't do it for yourself, then do it for the childeren.

;)

Overclocking your C2D isn't just a matter of UK law, it's a matter of the Law: you know, Nature's Law, the Cosmic Law, all that stuff. It's Darwinian, Newtonian. For all our sakes, man, do the right thing!

this is the second pc ive ever owned and ive got it to 2.88ghz no prob so i would have to agree with the majority, get clocking :D
