I'm about to refurb my bathroom, and I'm looking for some form of coving or cornice to go around the wall to house the lighting.

It will need to sit about 4 inches below where coving would go on a normal wall.

Any ideas on what I could use? Not averse to using something polystyrene or UPVC if anyone can think of something suitable. Painted MDF would be a last resort really.

are you talking about leaving a gap so that you can put a rope light or something similar in there?

for coving I've been using supercove:

I highly recomend it; it's paper faced polyurethane foam coving so looks just like plaster but is much much easier to handle and install. It only comes in '127mm size' which basically means if it was installed into the corner it would drop 82mm down the wall and project 82mm across the ceiling; so it's standard/large size rather than skinny or oversized. The pack with the adhesive is very good value and add a pack of screws or some specs and you can have it delivered for free, even on a saturday! (over £50)

I read somewhere in their literature that it's not affected by moisture when stored so it will not warp when stored; this might extend to being installed in a bathroom too but I'd be inclined to seal the back of the open end.

I think the only issue you will run into is that this coving, and I think other covings too have a slightly tapered edge so that when installed the edge comes away from the wall a little to leave room for adhesive. There's nothing stopping you from lying it flat to the wall but it may complicate cutting your mitre corners - if you have no idea what I mean by that let me know as I happen to have photos of what I mean!!

Yep that's what I'm doing, Supercove sounds like it might work, I'd rejected normal coving as I didn't think it would be light enough to stay up with only one she affixed to the wall.
