Cornice to ceiling

To make the most of the space in the kitchen I'm looking at the tall units (2300mm inc feet). My floor to ceiling height is 2425mm.

Sticking a 55mm cornice on top of the cupboards leaves me with a gap of about 70mm, which to me seems a bit daft as you'll struggle to clean up there, and a small gap will just create a dust trap.

Has anyone seen any solutions, or come up with a solution to bridge this gap? Only thing I can think of is buying a colour matching plinth and cut that down to size to stick above the cornice - but not sure if that would look terrible.

The previous owner in my house had a similar issue, he built essentially an MDF box just behind the cornice and to the ceiling. It's then been painted the same colour as the walls, or you could have it same colour as ceiling or units whichever takes your fancy.

It's a really good idea and tbh looks really smart.

When we get around to redoing the kitchen we're going to do the same again
