Cheers. What does "T3" mean in the context of Corolla model names? I'm looking at picking up a gearbox which is described as being from a "T3 T-Sport" and I'm unsure as to whether the seller is getting 2 different models mixed up as pretty much all I can find about T3's is that they are either 1.4/1.6 or 1.8 Versos with a 5spd box.
Yeah guessed they were different models but didn't want to tell the seller that and end up looking daft. I'll definitely check up on exactly what it is.
What's started this is that my gearbox needs to come out anyway so i'm looking at options as to what I can put in there.
Standard mk1 gearboxes are all at least 18 years old and generally suffer from dodgy syncros on lower gears which were never really up to the job in the first place. It's not uncommon for owners to swap the gearbox out for a 'good' one only to find themselves doing the swap again a couple of years down the line so I'm looking for a newer gearbox which has had these weaknesses ironed out.
Seems that most recent Toyotas with 1ZZ or 2ZZ engines have a box which is derived from the Cx series and so can be used once you've swapped the bellhousing and maybe swapped the gear selector mechanism from one side to the other. Plan is to do the work myself although I'll be taking a different approach to the link above which won't involve dismantling the whole box just to get the bellhousing off. Apparently you can just undo the external bolts at the bellhousing end and then open the box up enough to get a spanner to a couple of internal bolts which will then allow the bellhousing to be removed. Much easier although I'll still have to faff with the diff preload. Would make sense to stick an LSD in at the same time but they're a bit pricey so we'll have to see about that.
I'm trying to get a 6spd at the moment but will settle for a 5 if needs be just a matter of waiting for the right box to come along at the right price. Need to get rid of another car before I can start on it anyway.
Unfortunatley the corolla box turned out to be a 5spd from a T3 in the end. Shame as I've now learned that the gear selector is on the correct side on the Corolla boxes whereas a celica box (my most likely source of a 6spd) will need this swapping.
