My company runs a 24/7 reservation system where the majority of our booking confirmations transacted via SMTP email to hoteliers. For years now we've been running local SMTP using a mixture of Mdaemon and Trend IMSS.

In the event of a hotel confirmation message not reaching the hotel, in 99% of cases an SMTP delivery report is sufficient to prove to the hotelier we sent the confirmation, and avoid (potentially very expensive) relocation charges for the end customer. Hoteliers are sneaky and will often try to avoid liability if they can sell rooms from our allocation over the counter at rack rate, so this is a very important business consideration for us.

We recently moved to a hosted Exchange solution that uses Webroot as the SMTP relay, and we've been quite staggered to find that they only keep SMTP logs for 30 days, 90 days if you pay a significant charge. Often our bookings are for a year or more in advance so it's a real worry that we can't prove email delivery at a later date. It seems Messagelabs are the same.

Does anyone know of an SMTP filtering service that logs SMTP delivery for a decent period (at least a year), or at least allows automated retrieval of logs so we can store them easily? I'd rather not host SMTP locally again as it then involves a complicated path to and from the hoted Exchange, and lots of bandwidth usage.

Many thanks in advance for any advice!

This may be a stupid question, but can you not obtain the SMTP logs every 14days (or <30days) and archive them yourself?

Nope not a stupid question at all! In fact we've written a firefox script that pulls the info from the management web interface (there's no text logging). It's all a bit Heath Robinson though, and you end up with a lot of duplicates. Does the job though if nobody has any other suggestions!

Having said that, Webroot are pulling out of the filtering market, so we'll see what alternative our hosting provider offers.
