Hi chaps, bit of a long shot...having a networking MARE at work and wondering any of you guys could add any more things to check/try or tools to use to diagnose whats going on!
There is currently a significant degradation in network performance between all areas of the corporate LAN.
No new devices or services brought online onto the LAN which should be capable of causing the issues seen at present.
WINS and DNS lookups seem ok when tested on various workstations and servers using the following:
"Ping -a 10.3.1.19" - resolves to correct name using WINS
"Nslookup 10.3.1.19" - resolves server name held in DNS
Other ip's/names tested and were also ok for both protocols.
File transfer speeds are very slow between the following regardless of location in the building or which remote office:
workstation > workstation
workstation > server
server > server at the windows networking layer.
Transfers at the FTP protocol layer between workstation > Unix server and from Unix server > Unix server are also slow.
I ran Ethereal to capture traffic whilst doing an FTP transfer from Unix server to my workstation, this appeared to time out and looking at the capture the ftp traffic was seconds apart, interspersed with other network traffic and not contiguous.
I also looked at various switches on the LAN and could see at first glance no obvious issues in there logs.
Ping/file transfer between various workstations and servers using name or IP has been and is still erratic as of 8pm tonight!
My Next Steps:
External support to attend the company at tomorow to investigate further.
If this yeilds no gains and offers no insights as to the issues then Im doing a full system restart inclusive of all servers and network switches
and further investigation to follow after the restart!
As I said, any other ideas appreciated!
