The new Intel 6 and 8 core chips do not offer the consumer better performance in gaming than previous chips?
 
Pushing high resolutions such as 4K for benching then maybe, but gaming i haven't noticed a big difference coming from an i7 4770K.

Generally speaking for decent frames at 4K you'll need multiple GPUs

To run multiple GPUs effectively you'll need a decent CPU

The newer stuff offers better IPC so are generally faster but the older stuff isn't limited by temps so much when overclocking.
 
Gamers don't need more than a quad. Maybe if your using multiple GPUs but even then, you'd need beefy GPUs to see an worthwhile improvement with a hex or oct.

If you mean a previous 2011 CPU with the new Haswell-E CPUs then the diffrence is not much in gaming.
 
For benching it does, like I said.
In fact it is the opposite, at big resolutions CPU matter less and less because as you increase the resolution GPU take longer time to compute a frame therefore less frames per second, meaning that the GPU will ask for the next batch of data from the CPU less frequently (hence less CPU load).
 
So why did my i7 4770K @ 3.8 with 3 290's score lower than my i7 5930K @ 3.5 with 3 290's?

Yet made no difference in games unless i ran @ 4K res?
 
the cpu physics will bump up any benchmark scores (6 and 8 cores)

actual gaming I wouldn't worry going more than 4 cores unless you have more than two gpu's
 
Even a six core AMD is good enough for gaming.

TBH I would say you only really need a Haswell E (as in need, like really need and not want, very different things) if you are planning on running three GPUs and need the extra PCIE lanes.

If, as the Haswell E lot have said, X16 X8 makes no difference to games then a regular old I7 4790k or 4770k will be about the same in gaming as a 5820k.

Once you get to I7 territory you're pretty much good CPU wise (I mean quad + HT).

Benchmarks don't always run at the 4k res, so become bandwidth and PCIE lanes limited (i.e. the res is so low the calc and bandwidth needs are not there so it goes out all hell as fast as it can which is by this point limited on pcie lanes, which is constricted on 4770k but not 5930)

Games are GPU limited/code limited, why even a 2700k is still a good cpu.....games are limited by GPU and are always run maxed at 4k, not 1024x768 benches.
