Correctly Encoding VBR Files

I have 2 VBR files I want to append in VirtualDub - they are fine individually but VBRs.
Virtualdub tells me to uncompress them to WAV.

So in Virtualdub I:
Video - Direct Stream Copy
Audio - Full Processing, Compression - No Compression
Save

Then its out of snych, but will append.

How can I best keep it in synch ?
Something to do with interleaving ?
