Corrupt files in chkdsk?

Today I ran chkdsk again and it recovered tons of "orphan files" and found many corrupt files and "attributes headers" etc, what could be causing all this?

hard drive on way out?
one off power failure?
dodgy ram?

i'd do a backup of data on that drive and do some more tests..

use ultimatebootcd basic to find out if its the ram or hard drive that needs replacing.. (a format might well fix your problems..)

I'll try that, I wonder if this could be why games have been "encountering a problem" and need to close?
