Im trying to fix a friends Dell and theres a problem with the login, im going to do a full install to try fix it. Shes told me there are files saved to desktop that she needs. Where on the C drive will they be, i cant see anything obvious.

Depends on what OS it is and also if she's fit.

XP = C:\Documents & Settings\Username\Desktop

Vista/7 = C:\Users\Username\Desktop

You probably won't be able to access the contents if it's Vista/7 if the drive is plugged in to another PC without taking ownership of the contents first. A better solution is to install Windows on it anyway but do not select the format option, just install over the top. Windows setup will put all user data and the old Windows in "Windows.old" on the C drive's root.

I cant access the user account, only when i plug it into my second drive on my laptop can i access the files.

Is there a way to search the whole drive for all word docs, btw im using vista. Doing the basic search but not coming up with the goods atm.

*.doc or *.docx if she is using some of the newer versions of word. The * is a wild card and search will find anything ending in .doc / .docx
