Righto folks,

Heres the problem:

Over the last month the g/fs work has had some trouble with corrupt files for their main database program, resulting in several restores.

Im thinking that the HDD is on the way out, but is there anyway we can check like you can with memtest?

Also, its getting on a bit now and its probably time that it was updated.

Is there anything in particular that we should be looking at when building a server? ive only ever built user PCs so im not sure if there is anything worth taking into consideration.

The business is small, with 4-5 PCs on the network using one database program, all have access to the web and email.

Regarding backing up, is there a program you can use where you can tell it what you want backing up and it does it for you automatically everyday? Currently is all done manually everyday.

thanks :D

Depends on what drives it has, but if it's throwing up bad blocks the drives had it wether it's ide or scsi.

What build of machine they require would be absed on what the appication needs to run well, if the DB is all they use whats it based on sql/oracle/access?

For abcking up just use the built in windows backup, make a batch file up with the relevant command line switches for it and fire it off daily with the scheduler service.

I assume they are backing up to tape?

I am unsure of the type of DB, i am waiting for the missus to bring back the user manual for the software so i can have a nose at it.

Actually, they are backing up to a mem pen at the moment, but have the common sense not to overwrite the previous one, i think they have 2 weeks of backups before they overwrite.
