Corrupt Windows or HD - Pre Install Environment help

A friend of mine cannot boot into Windows (XP). She can only get as far as the safe mode option screen and no matter which she chooses, it will restart. I have only just become aware of pre install environments, so made a BartPE CD for her. We managed to get it to run and access her C and D drives but on close inspection (C:/Documents & Settings/Users etc) we couldn't find any of her files (desktop/My documents).

Also the computer would not recognise her external HD when plugged in. Anyone know why she can't access her files? And why her external HD will not work? Finally are there any better PE than BartPE?

were they locked (access denied)?

i tend to use a 'slax' linux boot cd, looks just like windows, and just works

Will i be able to install Get Data back on linux?

Not as I am aware. My copy is GetDataBack for NTFS but I don't think you can install on Linux

Slax is excellent. Nice interface, but as said, it just works.
