Corrupt Windows Update?

A few days ago my PC downloaded some updates for Win7 x64, all fine and good... until I reboot and now I have no soundcard, my 5850 HDMI sound is recognised and re-enabling the onboard audio is fine, but my soundcard just isn't picked up, trying to re-install drivers and I get errors saying there is no audio card connected. A system restore later and all is working fine, however I'm now getting the nag screen to reboot the system which puts me back to square one. Is there any way to clean out Windows Update files and redownload them to make sure nothing was corrupted during download? I'm genuinely at a loss to the problem here and I haven't found anyone else suffering from a similar issue since the update so it's not just a general conflict.

I have Googled around for how to clean the files but I'd rather get the info from somewhere trustworthy before I go tinkering.

Why not try uninstalling the update (control panel > programs features > view installed updates), take note of the KB number, reboot, then manually download the update from MS's website and install that?
