Hi there,

I have recently started getting some graphics card/monitor issues. It seems that when I boot up my PC from cold, everything displays normally on my desktop.

Then, after a while, I start getting noticable vertical streaks in certain areas of my screen. There are most noticable when a non-white or black colour is displayed, and can look very flickery. This isn't the best description in the world, but I'm not sure if it's monitor or graphics card related. I'm going to try testing the monitor on another PC soon, but I think it may be overheating / artefacting what I'm getting.

The card is an X850 XT.

I am about 3 generations behind in terms of my graphics card knowledge now, but I'd like to know what choices I have available if I have to replace the card, which card to get to gain equal or better performance.

Cheers,

Dave

well if its the graphics card and used for so long it might be dieing or just overheating if u not cleaned it try cleaning the dust were the fan is and see how it goes.

as for what u can get now 8800gt is cheap now and very good card, 8800gts g92 is quite cheap to but they will drop prices in june when the new graphics cards will be released. hope something helps;)

Cheers for the reply.

I took the card out of my machine and noticed that it was totally clogged up with dust (to the extent that very little, if any, air could get in to the plastic blower thing across the heat sink blades.

I cleaned away the majority of the dust, however it'm still getting the same issue, which is leading me to believe I have cooked the card or it's still too clogged up. It still takes a few minutes for the horrible vertical lines to appear now, but now it seems the whole screen is affected (every other vertical line is an off colour purply shimmering thing).

Pretty sure it's not my monitor still as it can display a screen of pure white perfectly.

Same symptoms as when my mate's trusty 9800 AIW died, sounds cooked to me :(

It sounds like the heat has got to it I am afraid :(

Is your motherboard AGP or PCI-E ?

Finally do you want to play games on the card ? if so what are the rest of the system specs, if no then even a simple ATI 2400 could potentially do the trick.

It's a PCI-Express X850.

At this moment in time, I don't plan on any sort of high-end gaming. The System is a A64 3200 with 1GB RAM. Nothing amazing by todays standards, but it is fine for running HL2 etc.

As I've got a shiny new Xbox 360 on the way, I doubt I'll be gaming on the system much, but I would like to go through some old classic games from time to time. I'm fine with getting second hand cards, but don't want to spend more than £40 really, I realise I probably wouldn't get anything as good as the X850 for that.
