Corsa Light - ABS Speed Sensor

Friends MOT failed yesterday because the ABS light was on.

She'd taken it to Quikfit so they simply told her "Sorry we can't fix that go speak to Vauxhal".

Great, she's booked in this Thursday but she said when the light came on about a year ago she got it looked at by a random indy and they said they thought it was a speed sensor (or some sort of sensor near the wheel).

Car is a 2004 Vauxhall Corsa diesel.

Basically any idea on how much she is likely to pay for one of these, if it's a common fault and how long you'd expect it to take to fix?

Also a friendly warning as to why not to take your car to Quikfit for an MOT, she's having to take it to Vauxhall get the sensor light fixed then rush it back to Quikfit within 7 days to claim the free retest. A total nightmare for her due to her job and absolutely needing a car all of the time.

Thanks

I remember there was a recall to change a part within the ABS on Corsas, I don't know if that would still be covered though as this was about 2 years ago.

Wheel sensors are pretty cheap - I see them on eBay for £15 or £20.

Fitting is generally pretty easy in most cars, it simply bolts on and off - I'd expect to pay for an hours labour plus the part.

If its the sensor they are an easy enough job, but don't forget the possibility of a cracked abs ring as well which would mean a new shaft.
:)

You only get 10 days elsewhere, but I'd agree to avoid them as a matter of course.

However, she's had nearly a year to put this right; it's a bit stupid waiting until the last minute to get it sorted. Why on earth did she even put it into the MOT with the ABS light on?

She had no idea it was a fail - some cars don't have ABS so she thought it wouldn't get tested.

Other places may give you 7/10 days as well but at least they might be able to offer you a courtesy car and at least be able to do the work.

Quikfit basically said "Sorry love it failed, and we can't fix it so you'll need to take it elsewhere".
