finally im back online after the 3 worst days of my life!
turned my pc on thursday, no response so after doing a few on/off tests i narrowed it down to either the psu or the mobo so i had to go out that day to get a psu tester (£20), got back tested it and yes... DEAD (1 flashing led on the +5VSB)
so being at night after work i couldn't really go out to get the new PSU so it had to wait till friday... so friday i went out to 'rip-off world' brought a 600w Arctic (modular) opened the box and NO INTERNAL CABLES!!!, so today i had to go back to get it replaced the guy didn't seem to understand at first (sounded confused about how the psu didn't have any cables, so i had to explain that the cables that plug into this psu are missing) didn't think he knew difference between modular and normal till today, so he said get another one off the selve he opened this box to check they were inside this time, they were so he replaced it i got back fitted it everything now works and thats my story :p

so now im going to have to RMA this Corsair as its only about a year old (december 07)

You have had a bad couple of days, You have a dead PSU, and then bought overpirced junk to replace it.

How much you pay for the Arctic?

a lot... £70 but this was an emergency!!! since this is my only PC so i couldn't order online + i couldn't wait until monday without a pc for oc to deliver a new one :(
but at least this new psu seems to be of good quality, and a little quieter + the modular design means i have less cables in here now :)

Oh man, i would have waited. But still, you'll probably be fine looking at your system. I wish you luck with it.

sig has been edited :)
just wondering... if i got a better graphics card would this psu be ok with it, 600w should be more then enough shouldn't it??

Well according to a bit of googling i've just done, it only actually gives out 456W on the 12V rail, and that's what is crucial, and i would seriously doubt that PSU would hold up for very long at max wattage. The wattage is misleading. And the build quality is poor for the price you paid.

I'll put it this way, if i were spending a lot of money on a new GPU, something like 4870 GTX260/260 or X2, i would be buying a new PSU with it.

You could have got a Corsair 520W or a PC Power and Coolling 610W for the same amount if you had waited!

Give yourself a big "Doh!" mate, and don't make the same mistake again!

: )

if i had a spare PC (thinking about getting a laptop) i would have probly looked at the Corsair 520w... are they more reliable than the 450's then?, i have read a few posts on here a while back about the corsair's blowing up and stuff, mine didn't 'blow-up' it just stopped working

this one i got now is rated at 100,000 hours (like most psu's seem to be), a google search puts this as 11.4079553 years, hard to believe and not many things i buy are here for that long LOL

The 520s are a different design but I wouldn't say they are more reliable. All manufacturers will have a few duds and it could have been a power surge that nuked the PSU.

That it didn't take the rest of your system with it is a good sign :)

The 100,000 hours rating is I expect, at 25C which is an unrealistic temperature inside a gaming PC. That said, now you have it and paid a hefty sum, I'd keep it. It isn't one of those PSUs that is a major danger to your rig, it just isn't fantastic.

well, all my stuff is connected to a surge protector so i don't know about that, 1 interesting thing i noticed (after the fault) was when my PSU was switched on at the mains the bulb on my scanner would flash, switching off the psu stopped this.
also i have always had problems since i have had this rig switching it on first time, at first i thought it was the mobo, but i found that waiting a few seconds between switching on at the mains and switching on the pc it started first time, now i know it was the PSU at fault, im suprised it lasted a year with this fault :)

1 good thing about this failure it that it gave me time to reapply thermal paste to my cpu, was never 100% happy with intel's job on the cooler but couldn't really be bothered to take it all apart to do this :p it makes a small difference i havn't seen my temps hit 70'c yet (the previous load temps) but am going have a run on UT3 now :D wish me luck

ok, i got my RMA for my corsair but am worried about how much it will cost to send, has anyone here sent back a psu before, if so how much and what company to choose.
*i would prefer to use royal mail as long as their not too expensive

well, the purchase date was the 24th NOV 2007 so i think its a little over a year old from a legal point :(

EDIT: how sad, my 999th post is about my dead corsair :(

Use interparcel I found them cheapest for my corsair to send to almere £18 compared to Royal Fails £28.

They collect it from your house UPS or DHL.

Good service fully working tracking system took just over 24 hours for mine to get there.
