Corsair 4GB DDR2 PC2-8500C5 Kit do I have to fit the supplied fan?.

Hi folks I have just fitted the corsair 4gb kit I purchased from overclockers but I did not fit the supplied optional fan as it obscures almost 40% of the front intake
on my cpu cooler. The memory is running at 1067mhz with its 5-5-5-15 timings at 2.1v. But I am getting the occasional desktop freeze its happened maybe 4 times since I installed the ram last wednesday. Its fitted on an evga 680i mb with a e6750 dual core cpu running at stock. Nothing is overclocked or tweaked and the motherboard is running the latest bios. Interestingly when memory settings are set to auto the ram runs at 800mhz not 1067mhz. So are my probs caused because I haven't fitted the ram cooler??

Please advise..

I would suggest fitting it to see if it stops the freeze ups etc. It seems a bit strange that it's happening with the RAM running as stock.

It may be running at 800MHz due to the divider/FSB set in the BIOS. I think you would need to change this manually.

the 680i boards dont seem to like RAM above 800mhz and too be honest you might as well keep it at that and concentrate on the cpu overclock. You may be able to overclock the mem later if you want but i didnt bother with mine. I also found that lowering the ram freq helped my overlclock so. As for the fan i dont have one but i know that it has nothing to do with how the mem acts.

Up the voltage by 0.1v on your NB as and if still does it increase Memory volts to 2.2v (your Mobo may be drooping voltage to Memory.

Hi Yellowbeard

I wasn't sure which voltage setting to change in my bios that relates to this
"Up the voltage by 0.1v on your NB" there are a number of different voltage settings I can change including:
nforce spp
nforce mcp
HT nforce spp

memory is still set to 2.1v and have set it back to 800mhz. If you could tell me exactly which settings to change I will try them.

On Nvidia based boards, they call their memory controller hub the SPP. Try 1.4v. If that is not stable, try also adjusting the CPU FSB voltage to about 1.4v or so.

@ adriancal, NB=Northbridge, Asus Bios calls it that but Nvidia call it the SPP, so raise "up" the voltage by 0.1v over default.

Also looking at your Memory specs in the OCUK store, it claims 2.1-2.2v, thats why I said set to 2.2v. (your mobo could be lowering volts slightly "Drooping").

I seriously doubt you need the Fan unless overclocking very high, unless case has next to no air flow.

Ok I have tried everything suggested in this thread:
Increasing memory voltage to 2.2v
increasing spp to 1.4v
increasing cpu fsb to 1.4v

I also tried dropping the ram back down to 800mhz, installing the supplied cooler,
and then finally after all of that I turned off the expert memory timings of 5,5,5,15.
And let the bios autodetect which gave me 5,5,5,18 and I was STILL having freeze ups
and also blue screens of death with the "page fault in non paged area" message followed by an automatic restart.

So I have given up and removed the ram and put my old corsair 800mhz 4,4,4,12 dimms back in (4x1gb) and so far (6 hours) its been rock solid.

So I intend to return the ram to overclockers and ask them to swap it for
OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-8000C5 1000MHz ReaperX, if anyone has any thoughts or opinions about this ram with an evga 680i mb I'd like to hear them.?

Many thanks to everyone for their help.

It should run if 4 x 1gb will run as there is no compatibility issues with that board and any of our memory. If you want to test it with Memtest perhaps you simply have a bad module. Good luck any way you go and let me know if I can help.

likely bad stick

Try booting with 1 of the new sticks, run windows until you experience a lockup , or sufficient time to know it would have locked up.

Repeat with stick 2. That way you might be able to determine if it's just 1 bad stick or both.
