Corsair 550W be enough for a 970/290x

Do you already have the PSU?

I'm running a 970 on a 430w bronze BeQuiet PSU, along with an i7 equivalent Xeon chip. Allll works fine, but I do get the odd bit of coil whine. I'm only running 1 mechanical drive and SSDs though, so if you've got quite a few drives or a high TDP processor or high overclock then I suspect the Corsair 550w will be fine with the 970. The 380 is a little more power hungry so I'm not sure with that.

It all depends on which 550w Corsair you have. Seeing as there have never been any CX series at 550w I suspect you are fine as the early models of those were the very weak ones. The other rubbish Corsair units were the VS series but even the 550w version of that has 504w on the 12v rail so should still be fine. If you do have that model though I would replace it at some point.

It should be fine but they really are a low quality budget psu and are not even 80+ certified. I would certainly replace it at some point. If you wanted to do it when you upgrade either of these would be more than enough:-

YOUR BASKET
1 x SuperFlower Golden Green HX 550W "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black £59.99
1 x Antec TruePower Classic 550w '80 Plus Gold' Power Supply £59.99

The Antec is built by Seasonic and has 540w on the 12v rails and the Superflower has 546w on the 12v rail. Unfortunately no decent modular units available in your budget.
