Corsair 620 enough for a Mega Rig? + 1kw PSU for UK households

If this is in the wrong section then i sorry :( , i just figured that psus would fit in the cases section

Heres the Dealio..

Ive specced up my next system entirely, and now im trying to shave off a hundred pounds or so. 40 pounds i could lose directly from downgrading the psu i had hoped for from a bfg 800 watt to the corsair 620hx, Whilst Ive heard that the corsair 'will' power a next gen Sli system i have my doubts, i was wondering if i could get some informed opinions on the matter, please remember im trying to cut money off the total not add it on, so please dont suggest me a 1kw psu even though i know that would be the 'best' option, and yes i have used the psu calculator but i thought its result may have been slightly off as most the Ampage is something that will hold the sli rig together.

heres my new pc spec;

c2d 6600 = hoping to overclock as high as i can >3.5 - but also with a quad core in mind for near future upgrade.

2gb highly oC'd 6400 ram, again i would like to leave it open for 4 gb

680i platform

2 x 8800gtx - moderate overclocks - again leaving it open to whatever 8*** models arise in the near future

12 x 12cm case fans - yes 12

3 x 500gb hdds, plus 1 x 80, 1 x 250 and leaving it open for a scsi/raptor

2 individual watercooling set ups with 120.2 rad and a pump to each.

2 x dvd rw drives leaving open to a (wheneverthis happens; sub 250 pound blu ray/hddvd writer)

4 x 120mm ccfl tubes

2 sets of EL wire

then 1 fan controller bay , external USB hub, led keyboard, and IMon VOF lcd that comes optional with thermaltake Tx

and yes i am serious about the spec. Im just waiting to hear the "dont buy 2 8800s if ** shaving money and so on", the spec is the spec :D, thats how its going down, Any advice on my choice of PSU is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance

Forgot to say im using a thermaltake TX, i may not need that amount of hd space but i currently have the Hds and keep them about 70%, 2 watercooling loops (1 to start with) 1 for the processor and 2nd proc on mATX (a month or so after the initial build), mobo components, and 1 loop eventually for the SLi dx10 components and whatever 3rd card gets thrown in there. Yes 12 fans - 1 infront of the hd cage, 3 infront of the mobo and one to the rear, 4 on the dual radiators, 1 for the micro ATX system and 1 more to actively cool the ram.

:D Thanks for the input, so looking at the 1kw range... Im finding it hard to come by any reviews for the bfg 1000 and the Tagan is also sparse. I know the Galaxy 'is' pretty much the be all and end all at the time being but does the bfg 1000 compare and equal or match its standards. Sorry to keep this going but again, i like to keep my prices down. And if im told the BFG 1000 wont guarrentee me peace of mind then ill go with the galaxy.

(Heh looks like ill be ordering some cheapy 8800s :( )

3 claps for the OcUK community, in under 2 hours ive decided to spend more than double on the item :D hahaha, I figure that if i get the galaxy it is going to be a keeper... :D

One thing though... I personally dont know a great deal about electrics, but when i jokingly mentioned to my step dad (joiner, not electrician, but well educated) that I might be getting a 1000w psu he said that the house would power it... hmmm, i laughed for a while but then remembered i know very little about electricity (other than what i need to). Is there any truth behind this... as ive never gone near that amount of power, or at least i dont believe i have..

Looks like ill be upping the amount of money I put toward the electricity bill :(

Thanks for your help guys

Just had a word with him and he said we had a 16 amp breaker, hmm
im thoroughly confused, But then again i know nothing about electrics in the house

no, thats a surge protector.. .

HAHAHA, damn....

So really, I started the thread to find out if a 100 psu would do the job...

and now 300 is more of a realistic figure, hmmm

Ive always told myself that for certain components I would never pay more than I allocated before speccing the build.. E.g

Case - 120 pounds MAX - Spent 150

GPU - 350 MAX - still achievable

CPU - 200 pounds MAX - thereabouts

system water cooling - 250 - spent 150 for the first loop of two + g80 waterblocks

Mobo - 150 - spending over 200

PSU - 120 - (undecided but upwards of 200)

At the end of the day, computing is among the most important things to me, and im willing to pay the premium to drive around in my ferrari. I dare say a few days from now (advice pending) I will shell out for the top end PSU, but only if I know for a fact that my breaker wont give in the second i put my foot down.

Advice from anyone with a g80 sli + quad core + similar set up is appreciated, eg. do you have a USP in placeand has anyone ever overloaded their breaker with pc equipment

I bow down to youe intelligence in this subject area, thanks for putting me straight. With my initial build i think i can manage without a UPS system, but when i pile in the components in the coming months i will buy one. thanks to all contributors.

Jolly

(holds breath ready for a roastin).. Thermaltake...

Does anyone have any first hand experience with a Thermaltake Power Express

if i can cut 100 quid off my initial build i will, does anyone know if one of these drive bay PSUs will power 1x 8800gtx,

Also If anyone has any review links that would also be appreciated

Spent some time racking my brain over this and found an old 195 watt sparkle psu lyin around, given the space that the Mozart TX afford Im Going to use a secondary PSU to power the Fans + Cathodes and other items that consume small amounts of power. Also the DVD writers can be powered off this second source.

With the removal of these Items from the Main PSU i can afford to drop down the psu a little, I read an article on (oh noes) theinquirer.com sayin top end 500 watt psu can support a kentsfield with g80 sli. I dont reaaaally think thats viable but does anyone know if either the thermaltake power express 250 or the fps Boosterx3 will handle a single 8800gtx?, If not I would Either go with the etasis 850 or silverstone Zues 750 as they are both on Nvidias Sli 8800gtx approved list, anyone who has used these psus please share their thoughts and or quibbles

thanks again
