Hey guys,

Just a quick thread to ask how I can improve my Corsair Obsidian 800D case to take in more cool air.

I have currently been gaming for the past hour or two and my graphics cards (air cooled, stock) are running at 74 degrees. They are GTX 580's in SLI configuration and are under a very aggressive MSI cooling setting. Basically I don't like them going higher than 80 degrees as my last 580 blew at around 85-90.

My reason down to increasing the air cooling capability is that I currently have a large fan blowing air around the room, my french doors are open (bonjour!) and its bloody freezing inside and im still getting warm air flying out of the case. I do intend on watercooling the cards at some point in the near future but for the meantime how can I add better cooling capabilities to the case?

I have air being pushed out on the 3 top fans and the back. The only intake as such is a fan I placed near the PSU. There is also the stock fan by the drive bays but frankly I have no idea what its purpose is (im guessing for hard drives and such but I doubt its cooling much!).

Thanks in advance!

that case is not great for air cooling, its beautiful to look at but pants for air cooling so you have a couple of options -

1) water cool them
2) get an air con unit blowing into the case
3) remove the front hot swap hdd's mod the case to take more fans
4) buy different high rpm fans and leave them on max, something like -

Corsair Air Series 120 x 120 x 25mm 2350RPM SP120 Performance Edition High Airflow Case Fan TWIN PACK : CO-9050008-WW

Air Series AF fan models perform best in unrestricted spaces with at least 3cm of clearance, and they’re ideal for mounting at the rear or top of your PC case as exhaust fans for your PC’s motherboard and CPU, graphics accelerators, and other components that fill the case with heat.

They work equally well as unrestricted intake fans for areas like side panels or bottom intakes.
For high restriction areas like hard drive cages or in other tight spaces where there’s less air volume, check out our Air Series SP models of high static pressure fans.

at the end of the day gtfx cards can take the pain of lots of heat i just think you were unlucky :(

I was having power cut issues at the same time so it was either an overheat or some sort of shorting. Luckily it was a previous PC build I bought from OcUK and had the whole thing refunded

I just dislike going too hot now.

I was thinking of getting the case customised to have another in-take fan on the side panel. It seems a bit silly to try and get air intake from just the bottom of the case.

that side panel could be cut to any size to fit a fan on to cool your gtfx

Here is what I did. I removed all the useless hot-swap interior and cut a hole in the end. I screwed a 120mm fan on the inside of the plastic cover pulling in through the return radiator. dropped the GPU temps quite significantly as a bonus.

Excuse poor quality pic. Camera lens is getting cleaned

A little off topic but 74c is a perfectly acceptable and safe temperature for a GTX580 in SLi. Although I don't know the particulars I'd hazard a guess that temperature played no part in your GTX580 failing. Hardware fails, it is a fact of life. The power issues suggest some sort of PSU fault which is much more likely to have caused the failure.

Warm air coming out of a case is a good thing, GTX580s produce a fair amount of heat at load, two plus a decent processor will heat the air inside the case if the system is under load.

As others have suggested, the 800D is not the best air cooling case out there, it is better suited to custom water. However changing the fans, removing unused obstructions from the airflow like the drive bays may help.

Yea im planning on putting the whole thing into watercooling awesomeness but im not there yet. My only concern is the 3 top fans are being used as exhaust fans and so hot air is going through my rad which is cooling my CPU. Id say at a guess the temp is around 30-50 degrees on load.

Pgreenwo I have to say, I googled corsair 800D mods a while back and saw this come up and I have to say it is the best corsair 800D there is. Its absolutely stunning!

The only issue I have is for me it doesn't watercool the cards and there isn't enough purple :p

Also im a bit cautious about getting any tools out and hacking away at it. Knowing my luck id destroy the damn thing...

I got my XSPC razor blocks today. Won't be going purple though!! Thanks for your comments

You will be missing out... Purple is the way forward!

That being said I love the Corsair fans you have. Do you have any images of the PC in the dark? Id be curious to see how well it is all lit up with the LED strips you have and what effects you have going on in there. Depending on the result I may be swayed to go Orange....
